Swami Vivekananda

Narendranath was born on January 12, 1863, in Calcutta. His parents were Vishwanath Dutta and Bhuvaneshwari Devi. As a young boy Narendranath was introduced to Philosophical books. He wanted to get a deeper understanding of philosophy and spirituality. The sudden death of his father put the family in a financial crisis. He started searching for a job and asking questions about the existence of God. When he met Sreeramakrishna Paramahamsa in 1881, he asked him whether he had seen God. Narendra nath got a satisfactory answer from him and accepted him as his guru. By accepting the name Vivekananda, he started his journey to the spiritual world.

Vision of Swami Vivekananda

Vivekananda and some disciples of Sreeramakrishna Paramahamsa founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1887. Ramakrishna Mission is an organization focused on social welfare and education. At the World’s Parliament of Religions, which was held in Chicago in 1893, Vivekananda represented Hinduism. He made a tremendous speech there, started by saying “Sisters and brothers of America”. He concluded his speech by expressing his hope that “the bell tolled for the convention may be the end of fanaticism, persecutions, and uncharitable feelings among those striving for the same goal”. He travelled across America and Europe to deliver speeches.

According to him the main principle of Vedanta is Truth. “Maya” is the differentiating characteristic of each and every individual.Advaitism put forward certain qualities to be followed in life such as mercy to others, morality and unselfishness. Weakness is the power behind all evil doings.

He became a powerful speaker and writer and he wanted to transform the youth as leaders. He raised his concern about poverty. According to him the solution for caste dominant system in India, is not by bringing down the higher, but by raising the lower up to the level of the higher.

Swami Vivekananda travelled throughout India. He was fascinated by Himalaya and spent some time for meditation there. Then he travelled through the southern states of India. He reached Kanyakumari on 24 December 1892, He swam across the sea and reached a big rock . It is believed that, he meditated in the Rock for three days continuously and attained enlightenment there. Vivekananda rock memorial constructed in 1970 consists of a bronze statue of swami Vivekananda and two structures namely Vivekananda mandapam and Sripada mandapam. On July 4, 1902, the visionary soul left the physical world at the young age of 39.Swami Vivekananda is a source of Inspiration for the present and future generations worldwide.
